When is it worth seeing a psychologist?

You are not sure whether you need a consultation. Things are difficult, but you still work and take care of everyday matters. You wonder whether that is a good enough reason.

You can come to a meeting with precisely that question.

You do not need to identify depression, an anxiety disorder or another problem beforehand. You can say that you have been sleeping worse, finding it hard to concentrate or avoiding social contact more often. That something has changed and you do not understand why.

Notice how long the difficulties have lasted and how they affect your life. Do you still feel like doing things you used to enjoy? Does rest help? What is starting to cause problems?

If symptoms persist, worsen or make daily functioning difficult, it is worth seeking help. Do not wait simply because you are still fulfilling your responsibilities.

A particular situation can also be a reason for a consultation. A separation, a loss, an illness or a difficulty in a relationship. You do not need a diagnosis to talk about it.

At the first meeting, I do not expect a ready explanation. I ask what prompted you to get in touch and what you need now. That is where we begin.

A consultation does not commit you to long-term therapy. First, we agree on the next steps. Sometimes a medical assessment or psychiatric consultation is also needed.

If you have suicidal thoughts or are afraid you might hurt yourself, seek urgent help. Do not wait for a routine appointment.

If you hesitate because it is hard to name what is happening, tell me. You do not have to know everything before the consultation.
